Their Biggest Cambridge show to date!
Former Mercury Award Nominees and the toast of the critics return for a show in the main auditorium in The Junction, Cambridge.
The Press:
“Isla feeds on Steve Reich mathematics, Radiohead dread, African desert grooves and ECM northern melancholy to travel into a new, chiming cavernous sound-world that is both exotic and hypnotic.” MOJO ****

“A melodic accessibility and cinematic scope as liable to woo fans of Radiohead as patrons of Ronnie Scott’s.” Q ****

“genuinely innovative.. there isn’t a band that sounds remotely like them.” Observer Music Monthly ****

“Achingly cool… a haunting sound that echoes in your head long after they have stopped playing.” The Sun

“A Joy to listen to, full of depth and detail.” “hauntingly mesmeric soundscapes…” Word Magazine****
___________________________________________________________

Electronica meets 21st century-jazz in Portico Quartet’s melodic, rhythmic music that mixes the inspiration of Philip Glass and Steve Reich with a very contemporary kind of jazz improv that draws on dub-step, electronica, rock, ambient and dance music.

It’s the blend of ethereal and fiery saxophones, electronics, otherworldly Hang, pulsing drums and earthy bass that gives their music it’s unique sound. Their hook-laden, darkly atmospheric post-jazz has pushed them to the forefront of the contemporary music scene and their inimitable sound that has been compared to Radiohead, E.S.T and The Cinematic Orchestra amongst others.
Sunday 28th August – Monday 29th August 2011
The coming Bank Holiday weekend sees the return of the Notting Hill Carnival. Unfortunately, there will be no Good Times soundsystem this year, but this shouldn’t dampen the spirit of any music lover as there is a huge wealth of amazing soundsystems to check out. Not to mention of course the amazing food and drink. We suggest having a look at the Time Out article which includes a rather handy soundsystem map. Get involved!

Geva Alon has been called “the Israeli Neil Young”, his plaintive voice soaring above gentle acoustic guitar or the fuller sound of a band.
His newly released third album, Get Closer, was produced by Thom Monahan, who has worked with alternative folkie Devendra Banhart, Americana types such as The Jayhawks, and the grungier likes of Dinosaur Jr. Seen supporting Paul Weller, Yo La Tengo and many more, Geva Alon has enjoyed huge success in his native Israel as well as the US. This is his last date touring the UK for a week of intimate solo set shows. Catch him at this exclusive and intimate event now!

Ana Silvera

http://www.anasilvera.com

A UK star on the rise. For a few years now, Ana has been playing on the singer songwriter circuit yet it was clear that her musical talents went beyond the 4 minute formulae. Inbetween criss-crossing the Atlantic playing exclusive live spots in New York and London, she has appeared at the Royal Festival Hall and on the BBC. At this event; Ana’s multi-instrumentalist talent will be textured further by the addition of a trio. After a sell-out string of 3 dates at The Roundhouse Theatre in Camden featuring a choir and performing her new song-cycle Oracles, Ana returns to Cambridge. Having packed out concerts at the Purcell Room, performed live on BBC Radio 3 it is clear that singer-songwriter Ana Silvera is a star is in the ascent. Ana has been collaborating with the cream of the crop on both sides of the Atlantic. Ana’s songs are inspired by and draw upon her own eventful life, as well as referencing mythical and historical tales for her lively narratives.

“Sublime…one of those songwriters who seems to appear fully formed in our midst”
Late Junction, BBC Radio 3

“Wonderful…as with all these things, it’s in the delivery”
Line of Best Fit

“Ana Silvera combines a poet’s feel for language with a film director’s sense of the epic; her songs stay in your head long after she’s stopped singing them”
The Verb, BBC Radio 3

“Ana is a wonderfully natural performer who sings from the heart with real emotion and great dynamism…one of Britain’s outstanding singer songwriters”
Marcus Davey, Director of the Roundhouse

With original material, singer and songwriter Gil has gigged in support of some major national and international recording artists and has been heard numerous times on BBC radio. He will open the evening with his distinct sound. Meeting together on the point where soul meets rock on a funk strut with passionate songs about love, hope and fear. The stuff of life.
